Release and Conservation Honors

Annual Release & Conservation Honors Awards

The Stuart Sailfish Club Annual Billfish Recognition Awards honor vessels, captains,
mates, and anglers who exemplify excellence in billfishing, sportsmanship, and
conservation through the verified release and tagging of billfish during the calendar year.

These awards are recognition-based honors celebrating achievement, commitment, and
participation within the SSC community.

These honors represent the highest level of achievement within the Stuart Sailfish Club —
recognizing individuals and vessels that uphold the traditions, integrity, and conservation
values of the sport.

Questions?

Annual Awards FAQ

Can I count releases or tags from Costa Rica or Bahamas trips?

No — awards are restricted to U.S. waters off the Florida East Coast (state line to Keys, offshore to U.S. maritime limits). This keeps awards fair and focused on the local fishery.

Does my release count if I wasn’t a member at the time?

Yes — but you must be an active SSC member in good standing by April 1 of the award year to be eligible.

Do SSC awards pay cash?

No — all awards are non-monetary trophies honoring achievement and commitment.

Who gets credit for a tag?

• Mate: the person who physically applied the tag
• Captain: all tags aboard their vessel count toward their total
• Boat: vessel total counts all valid tags applied aboard

What if two mates both handle the fish?

Only one mate receives credit per tagged fish; the individual listed on documentation receives the point

How do you verify my release or tag?

You must submit complete documentation including date, species, location coordinates, and names; official tagging program records are encouraged.

The Tradition Continues

For more than 80 years, the Stuart Sailfish Club has stood for ethical angling, conservation leadership, and pride in our local fishery. These traditions weren’t just passed down; they were earned on the water through respect for the sport, the resource, and one another. As fishing evolves, our commitment remains the same. By honoring responsible practices and recognizing those who uphold them, we ensure the values that built this club continue to guide its future—one release at a time.
